Honda, which has been producing in the Gebze factory for 24 years, recently halted production. We knew that HABAŞ had acquired the factory, but it was not clear what it would be used for. However, this matter is slowly becoming clearer.
According to officials speaking to the world, Mehmet Rüştü Başaran, the owner of HABAŞ, will turn his long-held dream of a domestic car project into reality in the acquired Honda factory. Under a domestic brand, the factory will be used for mass production of hybrid vehicles. It is also noted that HABAŞ has purchased the equipment of the closed Honda UK factory and brought it to Turkey.
The company is reported to be in talks with around 30 engineering firms for the project, and offers have been made to former Honda employees for the production of hybrid cars. Apart from this information, there are no other details available. Furthermore, Mehmet Rüştü Başaran is said to be a car enthusiast who has been eager to produce a domestic car for some time.
